UC College of Law partners with city government in grassroots development

CEBU, Philippines - The University of Cebu College of Law forges yet another noble linkage with the Cebu City government - Office of the Mayor, and the Cebu City Volunteerism Movement.

A project called Kaalam: Laws Straight to Grassroots shall be jointly undertaken by these institutions in mountain barangays in the city on September 10 to 11.

This project is spearheaded by fourth year law students under the Problem Areas in Legal Ethics class of Atty. Gloria Estenzo - Ramos.

Outbound education and thinking out of the box are the two key approaches in the study and application of laws.

Recognizing the unfamiliarity of the common tao with the basic laws of the land, this partnership aims to bring the law closer to the remote communities. The organizers are of the conviction that the law is not only for lawyers, law students, and the public officials, but for everyone who is eager to know the law and who has a receptive being to assert such right.

The two-day event shall center on promoting people's knowledge of relevant legal issues through three simple modules focusing on Responsible Voting. Katarungang Pambarangay, and Basic Human Rights.

Barangays Babag and Bonbon for the South District on September 10 and barangays Tabunan and Busay for the North District on September 11 will take part in the activity.

When asked about the rationale behind the project, a class representative said "The road towards grassroots development is long and challenging; nevertheless, victory is definitely within our reach if the various stakeholders of the society cooperate in undertaking endeavors such as this. Let it be committed to memory that knowing one's basic rights is the fundamental thrust of public service. I am positive that this is another step towards bringing people nearer to the heart of the government."
