Students to help Lapu-Lapu protect the environment

CEBU, Philippines - More than 2,000 selected students from both elementary and high schools in Lapu-Lapu City will soon help the city government implement programs designed to protect the environment.

Mayor Paz Radaza said the students will be inducted on Saturday at the city's Hoopsdome in barangay Gun-ob.

Radaza said the students will undergo proper training and attend seminars to learn about environmental laws and their duties and responsibilities as eco-tourism police.

Also highlighting the program on Saturday will be the signing of the memorandum of agreement between the city government and the University of San Jose Recoletos.

Lawyer Benjamin Cabrido of the Philippine Earth Justice Center, Inc. will talk on the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

The new set of officers of the Eco-Tourism Police and the USJ-R College of Law students and volunteers are also scheduled to take their oath of office.

Radaza said the activity is in partnership with the Department of Education and the private sector that are also campaigning for the protection of the environment. – THE FREEMAN
