Lapu-Lapu official urges residents to support "Kadaugan sa Mactan"
CEBU, Philippines - Lapu-Lapu City Vice Mayor Marcial Ycong asked residents to patronize the week-long celebration of the "Kadaugan sa Mactan," which started yesterday.
Speaking in yesterday's simple ceremony at the city plaza which was attended by city employees and barangay officials, Vice Mayor Ycong cited the need for unity in remembering important events that helped shape the city into what it is today.
Ycong said the week-long celebration is one way of honoring Datu Lapu-Lapu who emerged victorious over the Spaniards.
"Kadaugan sa Mactan" is an annual week-long commemoration of the battle in 1521 in Mactan between Datu Lapu-Lapu and Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
The festivities kicked off with a floral offering by city hall and Philippine Air Force officials headed by Ycong.
The reenactment of the Battle of Mactan will take place on April 27, at the Mactan Shrine in Barangay Mactan.
Last Sunday, a food festival opened at the Mactan Shrine where beach resorts and hotels in Lapu-Lapu City, restaurants, and other food manufacturers showcased their products. -
