CEBU, Philippines - Officials in barangay Opao in Mandaue City have assured residents that the garbage and drainage problems in the village are high in the list of priorities.
To deal with the problems, Opao Barangay Captain Basilisa Ouano-Icalina in yesterday's barangay assemly said the barangay would get support from the city government and the provincial government through Provincial Board Member Thade Ouano.
Ouano-Icalina said Opao was flooded in January last year due to poor drainage.
She said the city government is now addressing the problem.
On the other hand, she said the people in her barangay have to be told repeatedly that irresponsible disposal of garbage is unsanitary and if thrown into the river would cause flooding. Because of the people's hardheadedness, the barangay has to conduct a cleanup drive every last Saturday of the month. (THE FREEMAN)
