CEBU, Philippines - Students of Guizo Elementary School will be transferred temporarily to the Mandaue City Central School while their school remains practically submerged in rainwater.
The school board, headed by Mayor Jonas Cortes, also mulls elevating the school to prevent it from getting flooded in the future. Guizo Elementary School is located near a creek. Another option is to relocate the school.
Classes at Guizo Elementary School were suspended for three days this week –Tuesday to Thursday- following heavy rains..
Members of the city's Accident Emergency Rescue Team, policemen and personnel of the city fire department had to use rubber boats to rescue the teachers and school children from the chest-deep floodwaters last Tuesday morning.
During an emergency meeting last Thursday, Cortes ordered the immediate construction of 20 new classrooms at the City Central School to accommodate the students of Guizo Elementary.
Meanwhile, during an ocular inspection, authorities also found out that two other schools - the Tipolo Elementary School and Basak Elementary School - have been badly damaged by the flood. The local school board is also considering of transferring the schools to new locations. (FREEMAN)
