Tsubaki, the Japanese secret to silky hair in one second
MANILA, Philippines — Often duped and faked but never replicated, the real Tsubaki is now in the Philippines.
Japanese for the camellia japonica, Tsubaki is the name and the star ingredient of Japanese pioneer Shiseido’s foray into hair care. First launched in 2006, it’s everything we know J-beauty to be: harnessed from nature’s power, efficient, and effective.
Fashion fans recognize camellia japonica from French brand Chanel’s emblems in anything from tweed brooches to high jewelry pendants, but the iconic red flower is also beautiful from the inside. It is packed with moisturizing power, down to its seeds. Its seeds are high in fatty acids and oleic acid (Omega 9) levels. Don’t be turned off by the word “oil”; it is non-greasy and compatible with human skin and hair. When applied on damp hair, it can improve hair health and reduce breakage. Tsubaki extracts the oil by cold-pressing the Japanese-grown camellia seeds so they are able to better permeate the hair shaft and keep hair moisturized. Legit and now on our shelves are the latest variants enriched with protein- and lipid-rich royal jelly, typically used in precious skincare, and protein-rich soy protein, as well as a proprietary damage sensor function that finds damaged areas that need repair.
These ingredients are in the Premium Moist & Repair (the popular red) and Premium Volume & Repair (gold) ranges, but with twice the concentration in my favorite, the Premium Ex Intensive Repair Mask. I like its camellia honey fruit fragrance and love its near instant repairing power that most products in its category would take at least three minutes to do. When used together, it leaves my hair feeling clean yet nourished, soft, and shiny, without aggravating my seborrheic dermatitis. In a week’s use, I find that it has even lessened my scalp itchiness and oiliness, even on no-wash days.
