This season’s inspiration is driven by a love for the whole movie-house experience. The mood is the neon glow that radiates from the marquee, the excitement that comes from a night at the movies. Think classic golf shirts in mute saturated hues but embellished with the iconic Original Penguin logo; retro cartoon motifs in sci-fi shapes; fall-ready knits and blazers. The first delivery, called “Premier Night,” captures the electric and vibrant facades that you get during a night at the movies: smell the wafts of popcorn filling the air, as the anticipation builds for new heroes and plot twists to be revealed. The 3-D printed poly windowpane Ratner pop is an optical element that adds a dimension of action to the collection. The lights dim for striking black and white contrast pieces, such as the Harrington houndstooth jacket that exudes a stark sophistication. Strong graphical plays and engineered patterns lighten the mood for whimsical menswear moments. Soft velvet blues command our attention and narrative neutral tones touched with gold underline the story of the season.

The second drop is a “Sci-Fi Spectacular,” setting the scene for a fantastical adventure. This delivery is marked by ethereal colors and textures that cross worlds, both well-known and shrouded in mystery, for a bona fide sci-fi moment. Zigs and zags adorn nifty knits for a dapper look. Retro robots stand out on prep standards like the P55 embroidered chino. A British Millerain filed jacket and waxed cotton coat are ready for adventure.

An afternoon at the “Matinee” rounds out the collection for Original Penguin’s fall/winter 2016. The third drop sends a feeling of deep comfort, a cozy day, a mood that captures that feeling of anticipating a good story to unfold. Stand out outerwear makes for the perfect transition attire from home to theater with wool blend herringbone blazers and nylon blend mock turtlenecks.
