Gangs of New York
MANILA, Philippines - It’s that time of the year again. New York Fashion Week is back at full throttle and for the fall 2016 shows, we spotted the fashion set braving the freezing city streets to get first dibs on the designers’ autumnal drops. Subzero temperatures or not, however, everyone’s still dressed to impress (only this time, they’re giving their trusty thermals a run for their money) which makes it easy for us to compile our choice looks. And we did just that, creating our own supercool girl gangs with a mix of street style stars, celebrities, and freshly released runway looks. So bundle up, huddle up, and choose your pack — NYFW’s style tribes are beckoning.
New York may still be experiencing winter’s icy breath but that won’t stop fashion girls from dressing in their Fashion Week best. Their go-to hue? Camel. Fashion houses presented cozy head-to-toe camel looks for fall, ranging from Ryan Roche’s outsized knits, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s shaggy furs, and The Row’s luxe cashmeres. Showgoers also used the light brown hue to full effect, with stylist Anya Ziourova weaving through the crowds in a belted fur coat and Geneva-born blogger Kristina Bazan warming up to an updated moto look.
There’s no use denying it — these girls have lots of spunk. CL of Kpop group 2NE1 is becoming quite the fashion darling, spotted getting some quality photo time with Hedi Slimane post-Saint Laurent show in LA before playing muse to designers Alexander Wang and Jeremy Scott in New York. On the other hand, Rihanna gives up her front row seat and heads backstage, taking a Japanese gothic approach to streetwear with her debut as Fenty x Puma’s newest creative director. On the model front, Ruth Bell’s buzz cut still has us besotted but it’s Alexander Wang show opener Katie Moore’s badass ‘do that won us over, as she showed off some serious chops by, well, chopping off her waist-length virgin blonde tresses for a punky blunt bob in copper-orange.
Time to hit the bleach — Korean model and Estée Lauder global beauty contributor Irene Kim leads the pack with her signature rainbow streaks but don’t think she’s the only one in on the action. Hey, colored manes even get the editorial stamp of approval — Dazed & Confused editor in chief Isabella Burley goes for cotton candy pink tresses, AnOther magazine fashion editor Nell Kalonji opts for a neon blue ‘fro, and Nylon fashion director Preetma Singh gets edgy with emerald strands. The brighter, the better.
It’s all-out or nothing for fashion’s most notable rule breakers. On the runway circuit, Hood by Air’s subversive, PVC-heavy designs and Thom Browne’s experimental tailoring eschew the norm. Out on the streets, W magazine Contributing Fashion Editor and Vogue Japan Senior fashion editor Giovanna Battaglia aces it in a tri-colored fuzzy fur hoodie and super slick thigh high leather wedge boots. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, it really doesn’t matter — fitting in is the last thing on their minds, after all.
Double braids equals double the fun? At Creatures of the Wind’s fall show, models’ tresses were parted into tight pigtail braids, adding extra kick to crystal-embellished lace camisoles and navy double-breasted overcoats. Meanwhile, model Lily Kwong was all smiles after the Jason Wu show, pairing low double braids with a structured short jacket. Even celebrity offspring Harper Beckham and North West styled their hair into playful plaits while attending the shows of their famous ‘rents. From the runway to the streets, looks like there’ll be plenty of plaits to look forward to next season.
Leave it to Diane von Furstenberg to create a buzz with a fun fall presentation that doubled as a disco party. This season, she enlisted the help of her fave catwalkers Lily Aldridge, Irina Shayk, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn, Elsa Hosk and Alanna Arrington to liven up the atmosphere as they modeled DVF’s ‘70s-inspired designs. Dancing and drinking and a whole lot of Instax selfies ensued. As for the presentation finale? Diane and her girls formed a conga line while singing along to a rendition of We Are Family. Of course.
