MANILA, Philippines – To give an updated spin on old holiday traditions, YStyle asks six local designers to create and update their own version of a festive Christmas stocking. Stuffing sold separately.

In true holiday spirit, we put the spotlight back on one of the most iconic traditions during the Yuletide season — putting up Christmas stockings. The oft-ignored holiday practice of setting up a row of stockings for sweets and treats (also known as “stocking stuffers”) gets a designer update.

Here at YStyle, we honor that tradition by asking six local designers to put their own spin on the quintessential Christmas stocking, and to share with us their favorite holiday memories.

Esme Palaganas

Tell us about your Christmas stockings? I just really love pleats! And isn’t red just appropriate? Ha-ha.

If Santa puts something inside your stockings, what would it be? A VIP ticket to a Lorde concert.

My most fond memory of Christmas is? Right after hearing Mass at Manila Cathedral, we’ll always, always rush home and wait till midnight under the Christmas tree. That and eating puto bumbong plus Salabat tea after Simbang Gabi.

Best Christmas gift ever received was? Three-foot-long tube of red licorice. It was the best.

All I want for Christmas is? Less Manila traffic and maybe meet Dries van Noten, J.K. Rowling and Richard Branson.

Bleach

Tell us about your Christmas stockings? My Christmas stocking is made out of canvas with a metallic gold polka-dot motif and delivery/cargo stamp accent.

If Santa puts something inside your stockings, what would it be? Givenchy Seventeen Watch.

My most fond memory of Christmas is? Christmas dinner with family.

Best Christmas gift ever received was? A bottle of perfume.

All I want for Christmas is? A beautiful time with my loved ones.

Ziggy Savella

Tell us about your Christmas stockings. I used felt wool (which is an essential material in making suits) as the base material, then some decorative stitching for contrast, then finally finishing it off with a reflectorized piping for surprise purposes.

If Santa puts something inside your stockings, what would it be? Instead of candies and chocolates, I would like Santa to give me something healthy and substantial. Holidays are no excuse to not be healthy.

My most fond memory of Christmas is? I enjoy seeing my childhood stocking still up during the season after 20-plus years personally done by my grandmother — feels just right.

Best Christmas gift ever received was? I’ve been blessed with a really successful year; I have to say this is going to be a really good Christmas.

All I want for Christmas is? A vacation. Summer is too far away.

Proudrace

Tell us about your Christmas stockings.

It’s punk meets fur. It’s the anarchist of Christmas stockings.

If Santa puts something inside your stockings, what would it be? Patience, unlimited black T-shirts and Justin Bieber’s “Purpose” album

My most fond memory of Christmas is?

The moving mannequins at C.O.D.

Best Christmas gift ever received was?

I remember when the iPod just came out. I got one for Christmas. I think I cried a little.

All I want for Christmas is? You

Vania Romoff

Tell us about your Christmas stockings. It’s a silver and gold brocade Christmas stocking with a knitted ribbon accent and beading of crystals and pearls.

If Santa puts something inside your stocking, what would it be? First class tickets for three to Switzerland for next year!

My most fond memory of Christmas is? I loved Christmas Eve as a child the most! Santa, stockings and all those gifts!

Best Christmas gift ever received was? I honestly don’t recall. I usually remember the gifts I give more than the ones I receive! Ha-ha.

All I want for Christmas is? A happy, healthy baby girl!

Salad day

Tell us about your Christmas stockings? My Christmas stocking is a little gal that attracts unicorns. It’s a charm for those who have a magical fantasy.

If Santa puts something inside your stockings, what would it be? Money so I can buy a new iMac 21.5 inch. I think he knows how much I want one.

My most fond memory of Christmas is? Buying some puto-bungbong and sopas early in the morning. Also, food that my mom and tita always cook for Christmas. I can’t wait to eat those!

Best Christmas gift ever received was? A Marvel vs. Capcom action figure when I was a kid. It’s Silver Spider-Man and Morrigan with detachable wings — that was the best! But my mom told me that this is not just my Christmas gift but also my birthday gift. I didn’t mind that because at that time, I was so into videos games.

All I want for Christmas is? A pair of Y-3 shoes.
