MJ Benitez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Talk to the hand — tech meets beauty as the latest smart watches are paired with on-trend nail art styles to create the season’s choice combos. If the fall 2015 runways are any indication, negative space nails are getting quite the positive reaction this season. Much in the way that negative space is used in art as a key element of composition, the beauty trend considers the bare nail as part of the overall manicure design. The devil is in the details — Rebecca Minkoff’s chevron nails took inspiration from bohemian New Yorkers during the ‘60s, Tibi gave the classic French tip an Inuit-inspired twist with a curvy snowcap style, and Cushnie et Ochs went graphic with lacquered square appliqués.

Try your hand at the trend with this simple DIY tutorial from I Do Nails owner Monica Maceda: “The scotch tape method is a simple yet effective technique. After priming nails with a clear or nude base coat, cut the scotch tape into your desired shape. While waiting for the base coat to dry, stick the tape first to your skin. This removes excess residue and prevents the colored lacquer from getting ruined upon application. Once dry, stick the tape on your nails and paint as usual. Gently remove the tape afterwards with a pair of tweezers and seal with a swipe of top coat.”

And the perfect accessory to match your modern mani is fashion’s newest fixation — the smart watch. Check your messages, answer calls, download apps, stream music, sync to your smartphone, detect your heart rate… today’s timepiece does more than just tell time. High tech, high style.
