Child’s play and rainy days
MANILA, Philippines - If you want to find artist Jo Aguilar at night, you’ll probably find her at a gig, sidled up to Outerhope frontman Michael Benedicto. In fact, that’s how YStyle editor Bea Ledesma discovered her work — not at a gig, but on a gig poster, specifically the one she made for band manager Kathy Gener’s Attraction! Reaction! birthday gig at Route 196. Having agreed to create our logo for this month, you can now see Jo’s work on our pages every day for the month of June. — Cai Subijano
YSTYLE: When you hear “YStyle,†what kind of images does your mind conjure up?
JO AGUILAR: Young people expressing themselves the way they know how.
What was your concept for the new YStyle logo?
The cold, wet month of June and childhood nostalgia. I miss staying home from school and lying in bed on rainy days.
Were you listening to music while you were designing it?
I had about three Mariah Carey songs on loop in my iTunes.
Who/what inspires your art?
Different art movements in history such as Dadaism, Bauhaus, Minimalism and Ligne Claire drawing. I like applying principles from each movement to different aspects of my design work. I also read a lot of independent zines and graphic novels. As for artists, there are way too many to mention, but to name a few: Mike Mills, Adrian Tomine, Remy Charlip, my mom.
Who/what inspires your personal fashion sense?
On lazy days, which are most of my days, I normally just grab the first dress I find in the closet and throw a jacket over it. Band tees also never go out of style for me.
How did you spend 2012?
I spent the latter half of last year finishing my undergraduate thesis on typography.
What upcoming projects do you have?
Hopefully starting my career as an art director in an advertising agency! I don’t wanna jinx it too much, so I’ll just leave it at that for now.
