Albert Andrada’s gilded heroines

Chonx Tibajia - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Albert Andrada’s collection was a showcase of glamour, a nod to the medieval ages when fashion was opulence. His show looked to the imperial styling from the Byzantine period for inspiration, while adding modern touches like deep purples and metallic gold as well as juxtaposing fabrics for a luxe feel that is very now. Perhaps because film has so diligently documented the fashion of different eras, each look turned out to be reminiscent of a character, a scene, a memory we didn’t know we had.

A kaftan paired with gold metallic trousers is a look that should be sent over to HBO for Daenerys Targaryen to wear to a royal wedding –– her own, or if she ever wants to crash someone else’s.

An immaculate nude and white dress with a feathery shrug would fit right with in Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, especially with the LED projections in the background, or at the very least on the cover of Vogue on the delicate frame of Karlie Kloss.

A nude gown with structured shoulders seemed very galactic –– a look that a reboot of Princess Leia might embrace when she boldly goes where no one has gone before.

Another winning look: a sheer aubergine maxi skirt paired with gold innerwear and a brocade jacket. It brings back no memory in particular, but makes a strong statement on the runway.

Andrada’s collection was a journey. Whether through the excessive Byzantine empire or through film and TV, the designer took the audience on a trip, one that’s gilded and glamorous and stars some of the most powerful –– and stylish –– heroines of our time. The incidental narrative makes you want the clothes even more.
