Cai Subijano - The Philippine Star

Foods Porn

MANILA, Philippines -  For their first solo exhibit, “Foods,” Ryan and Garovs Vergara, the adorable couple behind Everywhere We Shoot, decided to take food photography to a new level, specifically with their favorite edibles from the grocery store. “Inspired by their daily life as kitchen-challenged newlyweds, Ryan and Garovs aim to present food in its most awkward glory  unwrapped, unlabeled and understated. Set against a bright solid backdrop, the food products are stripped bare of artifice, resulting in oddly appealing and amusing imagery. By allowing them to melt, collapse and crumble in style, EWWS entices you to recognize the often-overlooked charm behind these familiar commercial products.” The show opens tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Pablo Gallery in the Fort. The exhibit will run until May 31.

Pablo Gallery is located at Unit C-11, South of Market Condominium, 9th corner 11th streets, Fort Global City, Taguig.

Soles and straps

Now in its eighth year, the annual Make Your Own Havaianas event is about to kick off with the introduction of this year’s theme, Imagination, and the launch of Havaianas’ first-ever collaboration with a Filipino illustrator: Dan Matutina. Renowned for his unique visual mix of handmade and digital, clean and dirty, and old and modern aesthetics, the “Dan Matutina + Havaianas” will be the first glow-in-the-dark MYOH commemorative pair with a carbon blue sole and featuring two spacemen with space markers connecting the stars. As Buzz Lightyear might say, “To infinity and beyond” — with your creativity and imagination with a pair of flip-flops, that is. This year, the MYOH will also be introducing a crowd-sourcing element to the event with “You+Havaianas,” which will allow fans to design a pair of Havaianas, upload it online, and allow other people to vote on it. The pair that gets the most votes will be produced and included in the brand’s upcoming 2014 collection. Further mechanics will be announced at the MYOH event, which is from May 2 to 5 at the Rockwell Tent.

Sup, teach?

Last Monday, The New York Times confirmed that designer John Galliano would be teaching a four-day master class at Parsons the New School for Design in New York. Other designers like Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg and Olivier Theyskens have led similar courses at the institute. In a statement, Parsons said, “We believe over the past two years Galliano has demonstrated a serious intent to make amends for his past actions, and as part of this workshop, Parsons students will have the opportunity to engage in a frank conversation with Mr. Galliano about the challenges and complications of leading a design house in the 21st century.” No official word yet on when Galliano will start, but we sure hope he isn’t coming to class looking like this. Unless he’s channeling his spring/summer Dior haute couture collection back in 2000, which was inspired by the homeless French, thereby reminding his students of his brilliance-slash-insensitivity

Kracking off

Bad pun, sorry. Earlier this week, Reed Krakoff, president and executive creative director of American leather goods brand, Coach, announced that he would be leaving the company after 16 years to focus on his eponymous accessories label. He’s had an extremely successful run with the brand — back in 1996 when he first came on board, sales were at $500 million. Last year, they reached nearly $4.8 billion. “(Krakoff’s) contribution in evolving Coach from a house of American leather goods to a leading international accessories brand is immeasurable and we have great admiration and respect for Reed’s significant accomplishments,” Coach chairman and chief executive officer Lew Frankfort told WWD. Though his namesake brand is owned by Coach, there are rumors it could be sold to another group. Reed will be succeeed by Victor Luis as president and chief commerical officer, but no word yet on who will come in as creative director. In the meantime, Reed will be working on an advisory basis for Coach until his contract expires in the summer of 2014.
