Spring/Summer ’13 fashion and beauty trend report: Adventures in full color

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - With the thaw that spring/summer ‘13 brings, colors reawaken from hibernation.

This year, there’s an intensity to their revival as seen in the looks that L’Oreal Paris presents for the new fashion season. Forget pretty pastels –– the orders of the day are rich pigments of red, turquoise, cobalt, plum and orange. Forget as well the conventional rules for beauty; experimenting with color combinations and where to apply them are highly encouraged.

“Pretty comes in all forms,” affirms L’Oreal Paris –– Philippine Fashion Week makeup expert Christine Duque. “The spring/summer season is the perfect time for women to play with makeup and try colors that they haven’t used before.” Hence, unexpected choices such as mauve eyeshadow, ultra-glossy nude lips, and a “ski jump” blush (a subtle flush on the nose bridge). Makeup application is also more laissez-faire compared to the previous season’s emphasis on precision. “It’s not a color-by-numbers kind of makeup. Whether you want to apply them the way professional artists do with brushes or dab products on your face using your fingers, it’s all good. The key as always is in proper blending.” The perfect canvas? Youthful, luminous skin and groomed, natural-looking brows.

The beauty looks are as varied and arresting as the Philippine Fashion Week S/S ‘13 collections that indicate what is to come in the fashion scene. Drawing inspiration from different eras, from late 19th century arts movements to the political frenzy of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and from different cultural and historical landmarks, the clothes paint a picture of a new world order where women aren’t boxed into roles. The woman of the new season is a global citizen who acknowledges her roots and has a progressive worldview. She celebrates femininity by shedding the trappings of conventional beauty, going from strong to soft and from youthful to sophisticated with ease. And she isn’t one to shy away from color.

L’Oreal Paris understands this woman well. For S/S ‘13, the leading global cosmetics and beauty brand gives in to color with product lines that inject vibrant hues into women’s lives: the sweet brightness of Miss Candy NutriShine Lipsticks that settles on the lips like a delicious stain, the versatile harmonies of the Open Eyes Pro eye shadow palettes, the instant vividness that the Colour Riche Colour Intense lipsticks lend with just one swipe. Even hair gets a color boost with L’Oreal Paris’ hair care and hair color lines that allow women to keep their strands healthy even as they play with their highlights and lowlights in the comfort of their homes.

‘Tis the season to be playful, kick up your heels, and to look the way you’ve always wanted to look (but have been reluctant to try). The advent of S/S ‘13 is your super bright green light.

Spring/summer trend 1: ‘40s redux

How to achieve the look:

Face: Prep the skin with Lucent Magique BB Cream then follow with True Match Super-Blendable Foundation.

Eyebrows: Use clear mascara to groom the brows then lightly fill them in with Brow Stylist Custom Brow Shaping pencil.

Eyes: Using your fingers, dab a subtle gray shade from the Open Eyes Pro in Gray Harmony palette on the eyelids. Line the upper lashes with a liquid eyeliner with a bit of shine such as the Super Liner in Black Lacquer then coat the upper lashes with Double Extension Curl Mascara.

Cheeks: Using soft and round brush strokes, color the apples of the cheeks with True Match Blush Delice in Pink Grapefruit. Sweep color up to the temples as well.

Lips: Apply Colour Riche Lipstick in Red Passion straight from the tube onto the lips.

Spring/summer trend 2: Pink and mauve

How to achieve the look:

Face: Apply Lucent Magique BB Cream on the face. For trouble spots, dab some True Match Super-Blendable Concealer.

Eyes: Apply pink shadow from Open Eyes Pro in Purple Pink on the eyelids with round brush strokes, diffusing the color near the eyebrows. Apply shadow on the lower lash line as well using a dampened brush. Using feather-light brush strokes, blend in mauve shadow from the palette on the inner eyebrow for a subtle color change. Apply eyeshadow as well on the eye creases. Blend it in with the pink using round brush strokes. Line the upper lash line and the outer edge of the lower lash line with Super Liner in Black Lacquer then coat the lashes with Curl Impact Collagene.

Cheeks: Apply True Match Blush Delice in Rosy Cheeks on the apples of the cheeks, the temples, and across the bridge of the nose –– the “ski jump” blush.

Lips: Fill in the lips with Colour Riche Lipcolour in Berry Blush.

Russell Villafuerte

With a predominantly black collection mixed in with pops of red and yellow and tribal details, Russell Villafuerte’s spring/summer presentation gets its dose of color in this look with a hue that fits in with the designer’s urban-meets-ethnic aesthetic.

How to achieve the look:

Face: Smooth out the skin with Lucent Magique BB Cream followed with True Match Super-Blendable foundation.

Eyes: Using a dampened brush, apply some Open Eyes Pro in Vivid Green on the outer corners of the eyes up to above the brow bone; rim the lower lash line with the same shade as well. With a wet brush, diffuse the eye shadow to fill in the rest of the eyelid with color. For added depth and dimension, apply gray shadow from the Open Eyes Pro palette on the crease and on the lower lash line and blend well using round brush strokes.

Cheeks: Create a soft flushed look with True Match Blush Delice in True Rose, applying it on the apples of the cheeks and sweeping up to the temples. Create contours with True Match Super-Blendable Powder applied to the hollows of the cheeks with round brush strokes.

Lips: Fill in the lips with Glam Shine 6H Lipgloss in Creamy Peach, using a brush for precision.

Jerome Salaya Ang

Known for his penchant for drama (his collection is inspired by a Greek myth, Hades’ abduction of Persephone to be exact), Jerome Salaya Ang plays with contrasts for the new season: structure and softness, sheen and matte, warm and cold.

How to achieve the look:

Face: Bright and clear skin needs only Lucent Magique BB Cream.

Eyes: For a play of shadow and highlighting, apply Open Eyes Pro in Gray Harmony on the eyelids using the fingers, then blend in a darker shadow from the palette on the lower lids using a brush; line the lower lash line with a dark shade as well. Use the lightest hue on the brow bone, extending the color to the temples. To define the eye shape, apply Super Liner Duo Smoky Eye Designer on the upper and lower lash lines and coat the lashes with Double Extension Beauty Tubes Mascara.

Cheeks: Contour the face with True Match Blush Sandalwood Veil applied to the hollows of the cheeks.

Lips: Fill in the lips with Miss Candy Nutri Shine Lipstick in Miss Marshmallow.

Sassa Jimenez

Sassa Jimenez’s Morning Blaze collection draws elements from hip-hop, punk, and psychedelic rock, resulting in dresses that bring to mind the the high-strung times of the ‘60s and the funky groove of the ‘70s.

How to achieve the look:

Face: Prep the skin with Lucent Magique BB Cream.

Eyes: Use the Open Eyes Pro in Beige Harmony to create a light golden shimmer around the eyes, using soft and round brush strokes to create a soft gradation of color on the upper lids. Line the eyes with Super Liner Lasting Silky Crayon and coat the eyelashes with Curl Impact Collagene.

Cheeks: Create a subtle, fresh-from-outdoors flush by applying True Match Blush in Pink Grapefruit on the apples of the cheeks and sweeping up to the temples.

Lips: With a brush, fill in the lips with Colour Riche Lipstick in Intense Plum, then add dimension by dabbing some Colour Riche Colour Intense in Red Passion at the center of both lips. Top off with Glam Shine 6H Lipgloss in Red Charm for sheen.

Lizanne Cua

Lizanne Cua had a particular look in mind to pair with her spring/summer collection: an otherworldly beauty with fair skin, red eyes, and nude, glossy lips. Strong, contemporary, but still utterly feminine, it introduces a new idea of pretty.

How to achieve the look:

Face: For a youthful, luminous sheen, apply Lucent Magique BB Cream on bare skin. For minor skin imperfections, dab some True Match Super-Blendable Foundation.

Eyes: Apply Open Eyes Pro in Purple Pink on the lids using moistened and round brush strokes to avoid creating hard lines. Line the lower lashes with the same color using gentle brush strokes. While the lids are still damp, apply red makeup glitter on top of the eye shadow, on the eyelid and a bit at the lower lash line. Line the eyes with Super Liner Ultra Sharp and coat the eyelashes with Double Extension Curl Mascara.

Lips: Using a brush for precision, fill in the lips with Colour Riche Nutri Shine in Sweet Rose.

Ezra Santos

Reminiscent of Antoni Gaudi’s architecture in its fine beading and subtle gradation from champagne to gray and black, Ezra Santos’ collection called for fresh color alternatives for the face, a beauty look that’s fit for spring.

How to achieve the look:

Face: Apply Lucent Magique BB Cream to prep the skin and top it off with True Match Super-Blendable Foundation. Hide trouble spots by blending in some True Match Super-Blendable Concealer.

Eyes: With the Open Eyes Pro in Turquoise, apply cobalt blue shadow on the lids with round brush strokes. To create depth, apply a darker hue on the creases, blending it well. Highlight the brow bone with a platinum-hued shadow and line the lower lashes with a white eyeliner;. For the upper lash line, use Super Liner in Black Lacquer.

Cheeks: Apply True Match Blush Delice in Rosy Cheeks on the apples of the cheeks for a subtle flush.

Lips: For a youthful contrast to the eyes, color the lips with the balm-like Miss Candy NutriShine Lipstick in Miss Orange.

Albert Andrada

The delicate pastels, whites, and beiges of Albert Andrada’s latest creations were inspired by the Monet painting “Morning at Etretat,” further complemented by the designer’s use of Chantilly lace, silk, tulle, crepe, and chiffon.

How to achieve the look:

Face: For youthful, light-reflecting skin, use Lucent Magique BB Cream.

Eyebrows: Groom the brows with clear mascara then thicken them a bit with Super Liner Brown Pencil.

Eyes: Apply Open Eyes Pro in Smoky Brown on the eyelids using round brush strokes, then line the eyes with Super Liner Carbon Black. Coat the lashes with Double Extension Curl Mascara.

Cheeks: Create a delicate and youthful flush by coloring the apples of the cheeks with True Match Blush Delice in Rosy Cheeks. Apply light blush on the temples as well.

Lips: Create rosebud lips with Miss Candy NutriShine Lipstick in Miss Strawberry.
