Front row faux pas
MANILA, Philippines - Everyone was tuned into the presidential debates between US President Obama and presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. As we’ve witnessed in the last few months, no one in the fashion industry is more involved in the presidential race than US Vogue EIC Anna Wintour. After preparing a campaign dinner for Obama at Sarah Jessica Parker’s home in New York and becoming the President’s fourth biggest fund-raiser by organizing $40,000-a-plate dinner parties, it was no surprise to see the editrix in attendance for the presidential debates. What nobody expected was that she’d be sitting all the way up in the nosebleed bleachers section. Considering that she was sharing the seating area with other VIPs, like writers Hilary Geary and Wilbur Ross, Robert Zimmerman, Long Island congressman Steve Israel and former Sen. Al D’Amato. For all her efforts, though, we sure hope that Obama gives her a plum diplomatic post!
Golden girls
Octogenarian women seem to be having their moment in fashion. First came the blog Advanced Style (advancedstyle.blogspot.com) by Ari Seth Cohen, which exclusively features stylish women in the twilight of their careers in fashion. Then, Lanvin hired 82-year-old dancer Jacqueline Murdock to star in their latest ad campaign. And now, Dazed & Confused just made 91-year-old fashion icon Iris Apfel its latest cover girl, erm, woman. The bespectacled grand dame shut it down in various looks by Commes des Garçons. I can so see Tavi Gevinson doing the same thing a hundred years from now.
Fashion retiree
Speaking of cross-overs into acting, model Agyness Deyn has officially announced her retirement from the fashion industry in order to pursue her acting career full-time. Her latest cover for “The Lights, Camera, Action Issue” of this month’s i-D magazine may well be her last. “I’ve not done any (modeling) for a good long while now. I think it was about four years ago when my feelings were changing towards the industry. I didn’t hate it, but I was yearning to do something different,” she says in the issue. Her first acting role was as the goddess Aphrodite in Clash of the Titans (2010) and she has an upcoming role as a heroin-addicted stripper in Pusher. We wish you well, Aggy! If it doesn’t work out, your old friend Henry Holland will give you a job.
Zoolander loves Gaga
It’s been 11 years since Zoolander first came out and since then, we’ve contemplated what else is there to life than being really, really ridiculously good-looking and having perfect, chiseled abs. Now, news has arrived that Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are reprising their roles in a sequel and we just can’t wait for their next walk-off. Even better, recent reports say that Ben Stiller has offered Lady Gaga $5 million to star in the sequel as Derek Zoolander and Hansel McDonald’s shared love interest. The role has also been reportedly offered to Kate Upton, Kate Moss, Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima, but we want us some Gaga! Sign that dotted line already!
