Battle of the glossies

 Thanks to the Internet’s nosiness, no one was surprised when Vogue officially released its September issue with Gaga on the cover, nor was an eyelash batted when Harper’s Bazaar rolled out its cover with Gwen Stefani, Elle with Katy Perry, or Glamour with Victoria Beckham. Paris Vogue, however, managed to drum up a little additional press when it announced that the magazine had undergone some changes, starting with their three-cover September edition featuring Daria Werbowy, Lara Stone, and Kate Moss wearing the exact same D&G frock. In spite of her lack of boobage, Kate still takes the other two to school. Werq!

Farewell, Helen Gurley Brown

Too soon after the fashion world mourned the loss of Vogue Italia editor Anna Piaggi last Tuesday came the announcement of the death of revolutionary Cosmopolitan editor in chief Helen Gurley Brown at age 90 this week. Before helming the world’s best-selling women’s magazine, she penned groundbreaking books such as Sex and the Single Girl (1962). Three years later, Hearst Magazines tapped her to revamp Cosmopolitan, where she held court for 32 years, and later stayed on as the editor of the magazine’s international editions. She will always be remembered for being the first fun, fearless female.

 

Sharpening The Cut

Launched on the same day as the fall fashion issue of New York magazine is the newly revamped website, The Cut. The result of a year’s work in progress, New York editor Adam Moss told Fashionindie.com that their “intent is to have the strong visual impact of a September glossy with the immediacy of the internet. The new site will have the best in class photo experience, presenting images that rival print.” New features include serious zoom functionality, runway report cards, beauty Q&As that allow real women to test new products, and a vintage photo archive of iconic celebrity style. Michael Phelps for LV… or not

Just last Wednesday, photos surfaced of champion Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps posing in what appeared to be a Louis Vuitton ad shot by Annie Leibowitz. But then, in the same afternoon, the luxury brand stated that the image was “stolen” and was definitely not taken for the brand. Until somebody tells us what the heck all of this is really about, this whole issue is just pee in the pool for us.

 

Designer dibs

Members-only online shopping site AVA will be holding its first on-ground event, which is a private designer sale on Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Rockwell Tent Extension. That sounded like a wet one

Models are at once placed on a pedestal, only to be vilified in the next moment for being on the receiving end of such admiration. Because the Internet understands our complicated, love-hate relationship with these gorgeous creatures and likes to couple it with a good dose of really juvenile humor, modelswhojustfarted.tumblr.com was born. It’s a little bit like Kim Jong-Il looking at things, except with high fashion models in poses and editorials that make it look as though they just let one rip. Not even Coco Rocha was spared.

Shutting it down

It was truly a dream come true to see the Spice Girls perform again, but they weren’t the only attractions during the Closing Ceremonies of the Olympics. We just died when we saw Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Georgia May Jagger, Karen Elson, Lily Donaldson, and Stella Tennant walk down the runway in beaded gold Alexander McQueen dresses to David Bowie’s Fashion. That was definitely a moment. Those girls brought it and looked damn expensive, despite being paid just £1 each to walk.

50 shades of tacky

We tried really hard not to give a flip when Marc New York announced that its fall ad campaigns featuring 2008 Miss Universe Dayanara Mendoza and former Scottish rugby player Thom Evans would be inspired by Fifty Shades of Grey. And truthfully, we really didn’t. Not really. But what really got us hot and bothered was when TMZ broke the news that three apparel companies have locked down the first-ever licensing deals with author E.L. James. According to the site, Freeze Clothing will be selling knits, tees, and hoodies; HYP has dibs on hosiery, garters, and tights; and Briefly Stated will hawk daywear, loungewear, sleepwear, and underwear. We never thought we’d say this, but we kind of want Twilight to come back now. No, wait…
