Pinoy designer serves up some flash for the VMAs red carpet
MANILA, Philippines - Furne One’s done it again.
The Dubai-based designer’s work was spotted during the MTV Video Music Awards twice, when the program aired earlier this week.
Katy Perry, who took home Video of the Year and Best Collaboration for her single with Kanye, paraded in a shiny black number designed by One, who has created ensembles for the singer’s red carpet appearances and concert tours in the past.
“Her people called me to do the dress for the VMAs,” the designer tells YStyle. “They told me to do something record-breaking because Katy is a record-breaker like Michael Jackson.”
One’s instant interpretation?
“I did it literally!” he laughs. The designer fashioned a figure-hugging dress in Swarovski crystal mesh then created broken record disks from laser- cut fabric embellished with Swarovski fancy stones.
Perry also sported — count ‘em! — three other outfits during the show including a floor-length Tom Ford dress in deep purple and Christian Dior couture that included a Philip Treacy yellow cube head piece and a Polynesian-inspired thigh-grazing number that included a parasol by Atelier Versace.
But Perry made sure to let One know how much she liked her outfit. “She likes the dress!” he tells us excitedly. “I’m so happy.”
That’s a rapper
Rapper and Best Hip Hop Video winner Nicki Minaj also wore One to the celeb-filled event. The performer, who has collaborated with Jay-Z and Kanye, is known for her fondness for Barbie — she sported a blond chin-length bob for a period — and making a statement on the red carpet.
One, who collaborated with Minaj on a big advertising campaign due out next month, was excited to work with the star again.
“She really loved what I made for her previously,” he discloses. “She told me to design something very similar but also very Tokyo.”
The resulting garment is a 3D architectural piece made up of acrylic sheets hand-stitched along the hard seams.
Minaj took it from Tokyo to Crazy Town, styling it with a wig, Tsumuri Chisato tights, face mask and a chain necklace with an oversized ice cream pendant, finishing it with a tiered chemise in pink tulle peeking out from underneath the dress.
VMAs then… Grammys?
With One making his presence known on the red carpet, YStyle asked him what was next: the Grammys? Does he dream of dressing his A-list clients for the Oscars?
“How I wish,” he responds.
