Tokyo drifting
MANILA, Philippines - Tokyo is the center of trends — past, present and future. Walking, or sometimes in my case, just standing in front of Laforet in Harajuku, is a fashion show like no other. I see the occasional Gothic Lolita who covers her face with an umbrella at the sight of a camera, the mixture of hard and soft — spiked shoes and bright pink furry accessories, the men and women of black, Rainbow Brite’s minions that hurt my eyes like the sun — in a good way of course, print-on-print, men in skirts and heels, odd T-shirts and pants that transform silhouettes. Tokyo has no gender. But there are chocolates and sodas exclusively for men and women. It’s that kind of contradiction that I don’t need to understand. Tokyo’s style is as complex as its addresses and train stations. So, what is Tokyo’s style? It’s an experience.
