We’ve always known that fashion moves in relentless cycles. Now that they’re actually recycling the ‘90s, does that make Audrey Hepburn a little more than spun in the recycling bin?
I beg to differ. That is why they’re called “classics.” There were things that were so much better then. Men opened doors, drank coffee from real cups, women dressed up to go to the supermarket and kids said “Please.” All I know of that era comes from the movies and TV. Even the bitches were boarding-school classy, considering many of them had questionable backgrounds. In those days it was the silver screen, indeed. Today we have scripts written by 12-year-olds and a heavy application of CGI to mask its slapdash efforts.
While we have the drag queen chic of Sex and the City 2 to hold on to as our generation’s equivalent of yesteryear’s fashion extravaganza called The Women. There was something magical about the mixture of the perfected woman, the wardrobe made for post-war queens (WW2 to Vietnam) and that sexy drawl.
In a season that is teeming with classics — khakis, leopard prints, graphic pop art designs, neutral tones and ladylike silhouettes — it’s obvious that we’re all jonesing for the grace of yesteryear and begging the era of hooker wear to gala events to come to a close.
Reel them in.
Ladylike
The prim look has never been so searing hot. The anti trend look accesorized by the anti-It bags are the best investments for this season.
Glam
The return of luxe is a sign that things are getting bearish. Let the diva come out and play. No need to hide in your discreet McChiffon dresses.
Pop art
Okay, you don’t want to look like a fembot. Worn the Hepburn way, its perfectly fashion-forward without it going to the wardrobe of Judy Jetson. Try using retro tones like ochre, fern or teal instead of the obvious silver when channeling this trend.
Silk
It can easily be a motherly piece but paired with unexpected extras like lace and sequins, it says “Agent Provocateur” more than schoolmarm. Go towards luxury.
Neutral
We have been through hell and back with the jewel-tone era. It was coincidentally also the colors of the celebutantes who all carried porn videos along with their Pucci clutches. The new-trals are a celebrated mix of pewter, dust, seashell pink and even a cool whisper of periwinkle blue. However, nothing says it best than a great camel tone.
Denim
Well, now, denim takes and reinvents overalls into sexy dresses and coordinating trouser and shirt ensembles.
