John Lloyd Cruz bags some Chanel

- September Grace Mahino -

MANILA, Philippines - His first fashion moment involved putting on skinny jeans for national television. As in super-skinny black jeans. “This was back in the day when no guy would wear super skinny jeans on ASAP,” John Lloyd Cruz recalls. He tells this during a press conference/dinner that celebrates his fourth year as the Biogesic endorser — the nice, good-looking guy who bids us “Ingat” as he goes off, probably to charm more girls.

“I asked Liz, ‘Kaya ko ba ‘to?’” he continues. Liz, of course, is Liz Uy, Preview magazine’s fashion editor and Cruz’s ex-girlfriend, the woman that has been widely credited for the actor’s now-evolved fashion taste. “’Sige.’ So I wore them, and okay naman ang kinalabasan. There was also a time when I got into wearing neon colors. Lahat yata ng trends sa men’s fashion sinubukan ko.”

Now, Cruz has a more tempered approach to fashion, favoring more subdued colors and relaxing fits. “I don’t know if it came with age, pero pinipili ko kung ano ‘yung comfortable ako, with a sense of what’s trendy.” The actor, whose current flick Miss You Like Crazy attracted 1.8 million people to the movie houses and earned P18 million on its first day, works with stylist Rex Atienza and designer Joey Samson to create looks. Often spotted wearing cropped pants, a shirt, and a blazer with a pair of YSL canvas shoes, Cruz says that this summer, “I like wearing pants na medyo mukhang (from the) ‘60s: medyo wide-legged and cropped, very comfortable and easy to wear.”

You know a guy really appreciates fashion and style when he can dig even the girls’ stuff: “I like handbags. Would you believe I have a Chanel?” Cruz asks. “It’s not a handbag for men, but it’s not a 2.55, either; hindi ko kaya ‘yun.” Color us impressed.
