MANILA, Philippines - Pia and Maxine Magalona are familiar with the nature of loss. Francis Magalona passed away earlier this year, due to complications from leukemia, leaving his young family grieving over his untimely demise. Today, Pia and Maxine are supporting a cancer cause — cervical cancer, to be exact. The disease is the second highest cancer killer of women in the Philippines. Every day, 10 women die from the preventable disease.
To support the cause, the mother-daughter twosome have created shirts under their 3 Stars and a Sun line, a group of T-shirt stores founded by Francis Magalona. For every shirt sold, P80 of the proceeds go to Bravehearts, a coalition against cervical cancer. (Bravehearts is the information arm of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network Program under the Cancer Institute Foundation.) Funds raised go directly to the organization’s program which vaccinates indigent women without access to affordable health services.
Inscribed with lines like Ang Laban ni Maria and nationalistic images (a signature of the proudly Filipino label) silk-screened on the shirts, it should be easier to wear the cause close to your heart on your sleeve.
