You are what you wear

FROM COFFEE TO COCKTAILS - Celine Lopez -

I’m reaching my Donna Karan ‘90s moment. I don’t do yoga, I’m not centered, I’m not calm. But my clothes these days say otherwise. In the flurry of my early years that can only be labeled as the Prostitot period, my manner of dress reflected my lifestyle. The party is over, but not my outfits.

The day I started reaching for the leggings and sweats in Uniqlo I knew I was in for another phase of my life. The Dorian Gray sartorialist… this look may look old but it never gets old.

We’ve seen celebrities going to coffee shops in Juicy Couture sweats or in maxi dresses meant more for summers in Capri. Seriously, once you take loungewear seriously you can create a look that’s more Westchester than Wisteria.

A serious modern lady of leisure requires a healthy collection of cardigans and, depending on your persuasion, loads of black leggings, sweats or loose harem pants. The latter is my favorite. It takes me from a relaxing Pilates session to early dinner with friends in a neighborhood café. The look is aimed to the sophisticated, not lazy; a little French and not Robertson Boulevard.

Next time you travel check out Uniqlo, which I call the Japanese Gap for its amazing “don’t bother me” clothes. Jil Sander signs on as the creative director of the brand this fall, in addition to the stealth chic capsule collections of geniuses such as Lutz and Patmos.
