Rockin' with Rihanna

MANILA, Philippines - “I love being surrounded by beautiful things,” says Jenny Disini. The jewelry designer, who honed her skills at Brooks College in Long Beach, California for interior design and Istituto di Moda Burgo, Milan for fashion design, clearly has a talent for creating beautiful things. “Jewelry is so beautiful. It’s the only thing that excites me,” she says.

For her latest collection under her line dubbed Miss Disini — inspired, strangely enough, by Rihanna — Jenny created a few art-deco pieces that wouldn’t look out of place on the troubled teen popstar’s wardrobe. A pair of starburst earrings with diamonds set in 14k yellow gold is a fine example of her work.

“The RRF, a.k.a. Robyn Rihanna Fenty, collection is a mixture between edgy and classic with a modern twist,” Jenny explains. “I was inspired by her fashion-forward style. She’s a fashion icon who exudes strength and modern femininity.”

Though Rihanna is known for her outré ensembles — nipple tassels and a blazer, anyone? — Miss Disini isn’t the kind of flashy, almost déclassé sort Rihanna has known to favor. Instead, the collection has imbibed Rihanna’s tongue-in-cheek sensibilities and translated them into playful, whimsical yet entirely wearable jewelry. Take the tennis necklace in gold with diamonds (Rihanna playing polo with Kanye) or the delicate amethyst, emerald, topaz and sardonyx briolette pendants on 14k yellow gold chain necklace (Rihanna hits The Ivy). Both pieces mimic the starlet’s inimitable style without taking it to Lady Gaga-levels of outrageousness.

“A fine piece of jewelry transcends different styles and trends,” says Jenny. “It gives you joy and withstands the test of time.” And looks nice enough to wear to lunch with granny and fun enough to wear to the club.
