Bling is dead and thank the heavens for that. Little girls can now go on wearing clothes made for the playground and not for streetwalking. The elastic effect of the recession may have sharpened our fashion intelligencer to choosing singular pieces that have more to do with design and soul than with conspicuous consumption.
Eairth has been making waves worldwide in the international press such as W, WWD, Nylon, Lucky, Daily Candy, New York Times, Art Voices, International Herald Tribune and Time Out. Its ethereal tomboy-chic pieces evoke a very individualistic femininity; its organic shapes are inspired by the human body and nature. “Eairth originated from the love of artistic expression, nature and surfing. It’s truly a sense of being confident and at ease with one’s self. I founded Eairth in 2007 after returning to the Philippines from the US,” Eairth visionary Melissa Dizon explains.
Explaining the down-to-earth approach of the line, she adds Eairth’s mission is “to create organic clothes that feel absolutely free with an artisanal touch rooted in taking the essence of raw jungle pigments, natural fibers, the artisans, the indigenous, the artful daily here and comprising this into a whole way of life, a sustainable luxury.”
In making it stand out, Melissa says that “OMG” is definitely in the details: “I feel that it is the element of surprise, as the clothes are incredibly simple, effortless and organic. The clothes have a sensual character about them. Our colors are also incredibly special in that we use a process handed down over generations... using pigments extracted from fallen wood, leaves, roots, flowers… giving out live color.”
In the end, Eairth’s delights come from more esoteric origins. When I asked Melissa what it is about Eairth’s almost otherworldly aesthetic that has a traditional fashion populace suddenly entranced, she only has this to say: “Perhaps it’s about the unstated — that thing one cannot figure out...”
