MANILA, Philippines - Times are tough. Money’s tight. Doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with fashion. YStyle begins a series of DIY (do-it-yourself) projects that’ll help you keep up with the trends without breaking the bank. Get crafty with your closet and make something new out of a few outdated pieces from your wardrobe.
With the help of designer Ziggy Savella, YStyle tackled the menswear trend, transforming a pair of oversized trousers (feel free to pilfer Dad’s old clothes pile as well) into a seriously chic pair of pants. Materials
Your dad’s old trousers (or any oversized trousers for that matter)
Scissors
Two buttons
Tape measure
Thread and needle
STEP 1: Try on the pants and cinch the waist with a belt, then mark the edge of the pants where you’d want to make the hem. Cut off the excess fabric. Make sure there’s an allowance for cuffs (two or three folds recommended for a thicker cuff). Hem the pants.
STEP 2 : Take the scraps of fabric you just cut off, then cut off the original hem. These will be used as the tabs.
STEP 3: Fold the pants, mark where you want the tabs to start (inside the pants) and where the buttons should be placed (outside the pants).
STEP 4: Stitch the tabs inside the trousers, then stitch the buttons outside.
STEP 5: Snip and stitch around the button hole on each tab. And you’re done. Simple, no? THE FINISHED PRODUCT The cuffed hem should hit you anywhere between mid-calf to ankle. The results are so chic, it’s easy to forget that these will cost you next to nothing.
