How well do you know martial law?
MANILA, Philippines - It’s been more than 40 years since martial law was first declared in the Philippines. On this exact day, actually, but many of our younger readers will never understand the true gravity of that proclamation. When Former President Ferdinand Marcos signed Proclamation No. 1081, it would soon usher in years of abuse, torture, death and disappearance. These days, our history has gotten murkier, given how individuals and institutions have taken liberties with revising parts of our collective memory.
We know the stories, we know of the horrors of martial law, but how well do we truly know this dark period of our history? To commemorate the declaration of martial law in the Philippines, we examine how much we truly know about it.
