MANILA, Philippines - Sundays are usually spent evading your lola’s questions about your grades over her special afritada. (“The important thing is that we have our health, Lola.”) It’s a cycle everyone goes through, but it might’ve different for some people the other week. Last Dec. 21, college kids and nostalgic adults spent the afternoon unwinding at Heima Brixton instead, to celebrate the Ang Nawawala DVD launch.
Of course, the real star was the DVD on sale. There was also pretty sweet merchandise up for grabs—aside from the film’s vinyl record soundtrack, shirts and tote bags were also available. The best part was, fans easily got their loot signed by director Marie Jamora and lead actors Dominic Roco and Annicka Dolonius, all of whom joined in on the merriment.
The mini bazaar offered treats of the geek variety, with individuals such as filmmaker Quark Henares and Esquire magazine’s Ramon De Veyra selling some of their pre-loved comic books and DVDs. Artist Rob Cham sold prints as well, right across from a stall that offered picnic staples like grilled corn and barbecue. Attendees were as equally chill as the set-up during the Ang Nawawala film screening with live commentary by cast and crew. Folks sat on the parking lot, sipping beer and making new friends.
Folks stuck around as the evening crept in and the bands came out to play. B.P. Valenzuela and CRWN set the tone with their smooth beats, followed by local favorites such as Ang Bandang Shirley and Tarsius. Young talents such as Ourselves the Elves and Plant a Tree also added their music to the Sunday launch.
Heima also offered a vinyl DJ set for those in search of a different sound. Shoppers enjoyed the special sale and danced to Blondie while they were at it. It just proves that your lola’s afritada may rock your world, but there are clearly much better ways to spend your weekend. Just don’t tell her we said so. —Margarita Buenaventura
