Nice to feet you

The Philippine Star

Get to shop with a conscience as Toms opens up its first flagship store in Manila.

MANILA, Philippines - Justifying our love for fashion can be tough work sometimes. Sure, stocking up our closets is primarily a matter of survival, but even we have to admit that 45 pairs of shoes for two feet can be a little ridiculous. (But so very awesome.)

Thankfully, our collective consciences can ease up when purchasing a pair of Toms — for every pair of shoes purchased, the company matches it by giving a new pair of shoes to a child in need. The best part is that giving back won’t mean you gotta cramp your style: besides their apparent comfort, Toms shoes look pretty damn good too.

Showing off how great their footwear works across a constellation of tastes and personal styles, Toms Philippines handpicked a number of local personalities — including a few Young STAR luminaries — to model their Fall/Holiday 2014 collection.

In many ways the Toms brand is extending its Philippine reach, primarily through the launch of their first store in SM Megamall. The new Toms store offers Toms Eyewear too, which adopts a similar advocacy to their footwear line. Every purchase of their frames helps restore the sight of people all over the world, either by giving them prescriptive glasses or even sight-saving surgery.

Joining the third wave coffee culture with a pleasant twist, the brand launched Toms Roasting Co. this year. It aims to provide clean water to developing countries through the purchase of premium coffee. They’ll most likely make staying up all night worth it, especially when you know that your favorite brew has helped someone in need.

Given all the cool stuff that Toms has and continues to do, it’s very interesting to see a company that manages to sees beyond capitalist gains and actually manages to give back. If anything, Toms makes it easier for us explain why we love fashion so much. In fact, they’re probably a very good reason why we do. — Margarita Buenaventura
