Free thinkers

Francine Gacrama - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - With technology slowly eating up every bit of my attention span, I notice that my thirst for knowledge and creativity is slowly biting the dust. We have forgotten what it’s like to be expressive and wandering free thinkers. We have become so dependent on our umbilical cords that the idea of cutting it loose frightens us; at least it does for me. What happened to originality and creativity? Who inspires us and why do they inspire us?

For the remaining months of 2014, we should push ourselves to discover art and literature. It could be in ways of understanding your roots. Just by knowing our origin grounds us and makes us realize how much beauty and pain can exist in a lifetime. Why not get to know budding artists that have yet to influence people with their distinct way of expressing themselves? Better yet, see the world and experience being lost and feeling lost because that feeling of being so vulnerable pushes you to discover new cultures and create friendships you’d never thought existed. So the next time you feel like wasting half the day playing on your game console, grab a book or visit a museum. A little knowledge, they say, is a dangerous thing; but knowing a thing or two won’t kill you.
