MANILA, Philippines - A crowd of college students amassed around Yahoo Philippines’ new On the Road bus at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines to watch the country’s biggest bands play last June 9. The bright purple bus became a stage as bands played on the roofdeck with the loudness and sonic energy of a real concert. Rocksteddy and Absolut Play performed, along with Yahoo Celebrity Awards nominees such as Cheats, Brisom, Yolanda Moon, and Chocolate Grass. Other acts that are set to play include the country’s biggest bands such as Sponge Cola and Pupil. Aside from enjoying live music, students could try Yahoo’s applications such as Flickr, Yahoo News Digest, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Sports, and Yahoo Weather on phones and laptops set up by the bus.
The Yahoo Celebrity Awards nominees are curated based on who trended on the Yahoo Philippines site in the last year. This is Yahoo’s way of celebrating the very best of the Philippines, honoring local celebrities, emerging stars, and even dedicated fans in music, film, television, and sports.
“It’s heartening to see our local music scene continuing to flourish with these emerging bands, and it’s doubly fun to watch them perform live before an energetic and highly appreciative campus crowd,†said Joyce Pring, the host of the festivities. “It was simply fun! It’s going to be a real battle between these fantastic bands. I can’t wait to see who wins at the Yahoo Celebrity Awards 2014!â€
Catch the Yahoo bus when it stops at the Lyceum of the Philippines University and Far Eastern University. Voting for nominees is open online at www.yahoo.com.ph/celebrityawards until July 12, 2014. You can also keep up with the awards on Twitter by following @yahooph or the hashtag #YahooAwards. The Awards Ceremony is set on July 18, and tickets are available for free at SM Tickets. — Mariah Reodica
