MANILA, Philippines - Months prior, on Tegan and Sara’s birthday, Karen and I came up with the idea of giving them cookies after watching a few instructional videos. We were insanely confident to think we’d pull it off with zero practice.
Monday: Went into intense research mode. Their hair, clothes, instruments — plus Tegan’s ptosis, Sara’s favorite novel, their karate skills, their facial wash — had to be absolutely accounted for.
Tuesday: Finished illustrating all 36 designs.
Wednesday: Bought ingredients. Baked the cookies. Stayed up ‘til 6 a.m. to pipe the first coat of royal icing. Our crankiness got the best of us — we passive-aggressively insulted each other’s lack of skills, and went to bed thinking this was a terrible idea.
Thursday: Iced our cookies and our temperaments (we realized our skills weren’t so bad after all!). Woke up exhausted for days but kept on going ‘til Saturday.
Sunday: Designed the packaging.
Monday afternoon: Put all four boxes together with the help of my mom (thanks, Mom!). (She is now a Tegan and Sara fan thanks to the cookies!)
Monday evening: Met Tegan and Sara. Thirty minutes later — at the very moment we were feeling defeated with how awkwardly short we thought our meet and greet session went — our cookies got Instagrammed with glowing reviews. Twice. We lost our voices screaming before the show even started.
