MANILA, Philippines - We here at Young STAR understand the strength and limitations of the printed page—which is why we always aim to push the page’s boundaries. In our continuous quest to play with the medium, we decided to fulfill a long-time dream this week—an all-illustrated issue. And for an issue like that, we knew we had to go the extra mile to see the concept through. Going beyond the usual art accompanying the articles, we commissioned a talented young illustrator to sketch our column pictures. (Sorry, we’re millennials. Gotta prioritize the selfie.)
Meet Clarizza Lee, a 25-year-old graphic designer and illustrator who is quietly making her mark rendering beautiful portraits of people. “I am fascinated with faces and challenged at the thought of learning how to get the likeness on paper,†she says. She mostly does line work, which she says is because “lines are very neutral… I find I am most comfortable with them.†For a preview of her work, check out the column photos in this issue and her drawing blog dailyselfies.tumblr.com.
