MANILA, Philippines - Rob Cham graduated with a business degree from one of Manila’s top universities. All well and good, right? One problem: What he really wanted to do was draw.
Today, the 22-year-old comics artist, illustrator, and designer from Baguio is doing just that. When he isn’t working as a designer for Create.ph, he’s building on a now-loyal Tumblr following through his comics.
This week, he offers a treat to anyone looking for a light online read—a PDF of his comic 01. “It’s an attempt at autobiographical comics with structure,†he says. “This comic revolves around my issues with art and growing up with it in your heart… and soul?â€
He also contributed some illustrations for our issue this week. For Samantha King, Kara Ortiga, and Margarita Buenaventura’s article “Nine kick-ass girls and why we love them,†he drew non-crappy “crappy portraits of non-crap people.†It’s a continuation of his “Crappy Portraits†series, where he challenges himself to do each person’s portrait under 30 minutes or less.
