Entablado to stage ‘Labaw Donggon’
MANILA, Philippines - In the mood for something homegrown?
Ateneo’s Entablado is set to relive an ethnic Filipino epiko through contemporary music and dance in its season-ender this Jan. 29, Labaw Donggon: Ang Banog ng Sanlibutan. A musical-drama adaptation written for the stage by Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, it uses the fusion of contemporary and ethnic elements in pursuit of delivering a different perspective of Filipino values.
Director Dr. Jerry Respeto, through the original music of award-winning composers Dr. Jema Pamintuan and Terresa Barrozo, and contemporary choreography of Sergio Gahol and Elena Laniog, mounts the story of Panay hero, Labaw Donggon and his pursuit to fulfill his destiny of bringing peace to the three great kingdoms of old — Kailaliman, Kalagitnaan, and Kaitaasan (The Underworld, The Earth, and The Sky).
As Labaw faces the challenges throughout this journey, he discovers the limits of love and lust, the importance of the law, and the valor of sacrificing one’s self for the sake of mankind – all performed in the great outdoor theatrical experience the director has envisioned.
The production is composed of professional and experienced theater actors, an artistic team of renowned theater designers and directors, and a well-trained production team – all coming from various theatrical roots such as PETA, Sipat-Lawin Ensemble, Tanghalang Pilipino, Repertory Philippines, UP Repertory Company, Dulaang UP, Sharazade, Teatro Baguntao, Tanghalang Ateneo, and Philippine High School for the Arts.
