Back to Comic-Con

THESE AREN'T THE DROIDS YOU'RE LOOKING FOR - Jiggy and Jonty Cruz - The Philippine Star
Mash-up: Captain America and Wolverine assemble a team of Avengers and X-Men you’ve never heard of!

I remember the first time we watched Smallville and wanting to be Clark Kent. Not because we wanted to me Superman but because we wanted to be the ones to make Lana Lang smile. Sniff.

For diehard geeks like us, San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) is our haven. It’s our version of the pilgrimage to the Holy Land meets a trip to Disneyland meets a weekend at the Playboy Mansion. Our first time at Comic-Con was last year. It was everything we could ever dream of but with a whole lot more Slave Leias. And this year, we’re coming back for seconds — well, one of us anyway. Still, we’re looking forward to the surprises, announcements, and Kristen Kreuks that Comic-Con will bring this year. So if you’re like one-half of us going to Comic-Con or even the other half stuck at home, here are the things we’re looking forward to in this year’s SDCC.

Marvel Now!

2012 may very well be Marvel’s year in SDCC. With their announcement of Marvel Now! — the company’s line-wide comics revamp. All eyes, ears and fears are on Marvel. Last year, it was DC’s New 52 dominating Comic-Con but now, Marvel looks to make an even bigger splash. They’ve already revealed their first titles for the revamp like Uncanny Avengers by Rick Remender and John Cassaday, All-New X-Men by Brian Bendis and Stuart Immonen, and Avengers by Jonathan Hickman and Filipino Jerome Opena. With the recent success of the Avengers film, Marvel hopes to do the same for their revamp. Just don’t call it a reboot.

Iron Man 3

Tony Stark returns to San Diego! With next year’s Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr. is set to take the stage to talk about the next phase of Marvel Studio’s film plans. Hopefully, Downey will give everyone some hints on what will happen to the armored avenger next year. We doubt that footage will be shown, but knowing Marvel’s love of Easter eggs, we’re sure the panel will have a couple of surprises for the fans. And by Easter eggs, we mean they better have Sir Ben Kingsley on the panel.

Image Comics’ 20th Anniversary Panel

The most successful independent comic publisher is having their biggest panel yet. If that line sounds like a press release, it’s just because we’re terribly excited for this one. Image dominated the sales chart back in the ’90s and was the biggest reason why all the cool kids started reading comics again. Today, they’ve released comics such as The Walking Dead, Wanted, and our favorite comic book today: Saga. Expect to hear the origins of Image and maybe a couple of teases on what to expect from the company.

Kristin Kreuk

“Lana Lang” will be stopping by Comic-Con this year to promote her new show on Beauty and the Beast. We don’t really care what the new show is about. We only care about seeing Kristen as she showers us with false love and contractually obligated smiles.

The Six Batmobiles

This year, the coolest things in four wheels are coming to Comic-Con! In anticipation of The Dark Knight Rises, the six Batmobiles from Batman’s rich TV and movie history will be on display. Parked and showcased outside the convention center will be the classic Batmobile from Adam West’s ‘60s TV show, the Michael Keaton version from Batman. Val Kilmer and George Clooney’s Batmobiles from Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, the Tumbler from the recent Christopher Nolan movies and the new version from the upcoming movie. We can’t wait to Instagram the crap out of this!

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con takes place on July 11 to 15. Make sure to come back next week for our SDCC recap. Till then, we suggest you watch Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 again.
