MANILA, Philippines - Young photog Roy Macam is proving a point with his Instagram portrait series. A good photographer can take good photos with anything — even an iPhone camera.
Since digital cameras are everywhere, I wanted to show that even if it’s just a phone camera, I can still capture the raw beauty of people,” Roy Macam says. It’s an understandable predicament for a rising young photographer in a time when anyone with a DSLR likes to lug around the “photographer” tag. Roy’s pet project, which he says started because he just wanted to do something that’s “fresh and different from how others use Instagram,” proves that when it comes to art, it’s never the tools that matter but the vision and aesthetic behind them.
“It was just for fun and just a personal thing of mine but now everyone seems to love the idea,” Roy says. “They say I should do an exhibit of my Instagram series… I love shooting people and I love black and white (photography) so it’s the perfect (concept for me)…” But before any talk of an exhibit, Roy still has the world to conquer. “I would love to do my Instagram series all over the world.”
