Rock that heavy metal Dragon
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine STAR and Swatch celebrate the seventh year of the Annual Chinese New Year Art Competition. Since 2012 is the Year of the Dragon, this year’s theme is entitled the “Enter the Dragon” T-shirt competition. It is a competition open to all.
Igan D’Bayan — a Lifestyle assistant editor at The Philippine STAR, the bassist for The Black Vomits, and a visual artist , drew inspiration from his favorite Swatch watch line: the Swatch Irony Full-Blooded Black Skull for his “Enter the Dragon” T-shirt design.
D’Bayan explains, “I wear this watch every day. Never going to get tired of it. I love skulls. The skull is the happy face of my generation. My entire art career revolves around skulls (laughs). So, when the good people of Swatch asked me to design a shirt as part of the Swatch and STAR promo, the image of the skull popped right into my head.”
D’Bayan took one of those generic skull shirts in black and got to work right away. He says, “Instead of sewing studs, buttons or what-not, I just decided to paint over the image. Took my gray acrylics and painted a heavy-metal-type dragon. Kind of inspired by Iron Maiden and Cradle of Filth. I call it ‘The Dragon of Doom.’”
