SCENE + HERD: MYX Mo! 2010

-

MANILA, Philippines - Scene: Hearts proudly sprawled across the chests of a 60,000-strong crowd, declaring their love for MYX Mo! 2010 at the Mall of Asia concert grounds. Brick-like columns surrounded the elaborately lit stage to resemble a dehydrated moat (but which is really a mosh pit). The grounds rumbled and shook, and your ears shuddered from the droning bass. Some of our local music industry’s most promising and celebrated acts, added to the expected concert ethos: guitar swelling, some head bobbing, jumping, and singing along.

In the end, though, all those extraneous details got eclipsed and it didn’t matter; it wasn’t about me, the VJs, or even about the shirts that declare outright love — it was about the music. It was so evident that there is strength in numbers, and as the industry is gaining momentum, so is MYX. In the span of their decade-long stint, they’ve become a part of many pubescent woes, dreams, and tweenage optimism — to others, maybe even a support system. In their years of being both an adolescent and adult outlet, we’re now being brought the pulse of our local music’s lifeline, and it’s beating wildly and and pretty darn hard.

Your choice, your music? That kind of personalized option shows some real, big love.

Sights: Not to be outdone by the night’s lineup, VJs Luis, Bianca, Iya, Nikki and Chino were class acts by themselves — building the hype for every succeeding band.

Sounds: Acts like Chicosci, Tanya Markova, Kjwan, Sandwich, Pedicab, Imago, Ubrandub, Parokya ni Edgar, and Rivermaya did more than rock the house with their notorious anthems, while the soulful serenading and much tugging at the heartstrings was covered by Yeng Costantino, Kyla, Richard Poon, Christian Bautista, Nina, and Champ Lui Pio, among others.
