A lotta girls come to watch,” says Tengal Drilon, founder and curator of Fete dela WSK. “They come to see something different, something perhaps alien. Chicks loves bad boys after all — and you could say we’re the bad boy of music festivals here in the country.”
Started in 2008, Fete dela WSK, possibly the country’s strangest music international music and arts festival, opens tonight with no less than Paris-based Japanese electronic music/avant-pop acts in the world today, Tujiko Noriko at the Parallax Studio in Makati. Having played the biggest international festivals in Europe like Transmediale, Sonar and Mutek, it’ll be her first-ever gig in South East Asia. In an exclusive interview, she told us that she does think her being Japanese has a big influence on her music despite being based in France.
“Yes, I feel I have Japanese music memories in me a lot,” she says. “I have something like douyou (i.e., songs for kids) in my music. Also maybe something wet, and dark, and no center.”
On the question of whether her sex affects the music she plays, she says, “Oh, my music is not so much sexual, I guess. But as I’m a woman, maybe there is woman in my music.”
Also performing that night is Malek Lopez (formerly of local pop-electronica act Drip and still currently one-half of pioneering electronic music pioneers Rubber Inc) who is doing a special performance called “Sonic Kitchen” in collaboration with Ninyo Fusion Cuisine and Wine Lounge, wherein he will be manipulating the sounds of the food being prepared to create “sound-scapes.” French sound artist Sebastien Szczyrk will present an experimental performance using field recordings. There will also be performances by acclaimed local musicians Pasta Groove in-between sets of obscure Asian records as well a very special performance by fashion maven Kate Torralba.
It starts at 9 p.m. and will be held at the Parallax Studios located at 7389 Bakawan St., San Antonio Village, Makati City.
So exactly what kind of girls go to these things?
“The interesting ones,” smiles Tengal. “Hot, too.”
