SCENE + HERD MARKET FRESH! The Young Star Re-launch Party and Rock Market

Main squeeze: Sleepwalk Circus’s Laurie Marvilla plays it fresh.

Scene: To complement the re-launch of this here section, Samsung and Young Star brought the buys, booze, and beats to the city’s newest all-ternative hangout: The Collective, along Malugay Street in Makati City.

Peddling a variety of urban goods and a lot of farmed cool under massive tents were retail and recreational renegades like the Manila Contemporary Gallery, Team Manila, the Manila Surf Association, Artwork, and novelty specialty store Quirks. Not to mention all-the-rage maquillage brand Etude House handing swag and ‘staches — pink ones, mind you — out to the ladies.

Talk about refreshment this summer what with the Global Beer Exchange setting up a booth for beer (the tasty, premium kind) and Coney Island, that good ol’ staple of childhood cheer, serving up frozen treats. Of course, everyone who sweated it out on the dance floor, partying while clinging to their purchases, knew that since our premier issue last March 26, Young Star’s been all about keeping it fresh.

Sights: Well, there were Channel V VJs Alvin Pulga and Cliff Cole putting the high voltage into their hosting, even with the heat jacked up. Former MTV VJ and new U92 DJ Eri Neeman wasn’t to be outdone, however, as he, his fellow DJ Carisse Escueta, and our very own Regina Belmonte turned up the crowd’s moxie, getting everyone epileptic as they introduced the event’s irreverent music acts. The heat followed, of course.

Sounds: With brands that made a difference, there were, of course, bands that were all about indifference; positive, that is. It wasn’t called The Rock Market for nothing. And while a righteous stream of rock was delivered by acts like Sleepwalk Circus, Duster, Ernville, Imago, Up Dharma Down, and The Diegos, the crowd convulsed to Sandwich and Pedicab.
