Spotting imagination

How powerful is the imagination? Broad as this opening statement may sound, humans are still incapable of making things materialize out of thin air. The cheeseburger that I imagine is in my hand, for example, is still not there. But you and I know that imagination can deal with more pressing matters than a sandwich.

The phrase “I imagine” speaks of hope and of change. For pessimists, it is the phrase that begins many lofty thoughts. “I imagine a world without world hunger,” or “I imagine a government free from corruption” seems impossible. But then again, many things that were topics of science fiction 20 or 30 years ago are now a reality. The videophone, nanotechnology, hybrid automobiles — all it really took was a little imagination.

The same train of thought can likewise be applied to making social change. Nowadays the saying “all it takes is one really good idea” couldn’t be more true. We live in a time where great changes can be made quickly, and where resources are readily available (albeit dwindling in some areas). With so many ideas already having seen fruition, imagination remains the single most valuable commodity. Everyone is on a constant lookout for fresh thoughts and ideas.

Many of these original concepts are envisioned by young people. Part of it is the fire that youngsters have. Idealism, enthusiasm, and a sense of humanity and compassion are the characteristic traits that make young individuals imagine outside the box. This is why electronics brand Samsung has targeted the youth in their latest project.

With its “I Imagine” campaign, Samsung focuses on the young generation’s passions, concerns and outlooks. Encouraging the Filipino youth to speak up and voice their opinions, thoughts, feelings and ideas, this leader in digital electronics media has created a venue for young people to say what they think.

Simply by logging onto www.samsungimagine.com, Metro Manila college students currently enrolled this school year can register and create their own slogan by completing the statement: “I Imagine...” Whether in English or Filipino, these messages must fall under one of three categories: Talk, for expressing emotions, ideas, thoughts, dreams, hopes and ambitions; Play, to talk about how life is experienced through love of music, sports, fashion and the arts; and Love, for declaring how bonds are formed with family and friends through shared interests and passions.

As an added bonus, all those who register on the website automatically receive a raffle entry to win more exciting prizes. The draw date is on Dec. 15.

“I imagine” are two words that can change an entire mindset. At a time when interconnectivity through technology happens on a daily basis, hearing everyone else’s thoughts can be very reassuring. These thoughts can be the start of a real holistic change. For the youths who will determine the future of this country, it really doesn’t hurt to imagine.
