Globe lends a helping hand to 'Ondoy' victims

-

MANILA, Philippines - Globe joins the whole nation in its massive effort to help typhoon “Ondoy” victims by providing relief assistance and free calls to communities affected by one of the worst storms to hit the country in 40 years.

Globe, through its corporate social responsibility arm Globe Bridging Communities (Globe BridgeCom), donated P1 million each to ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya and GMA Kapuso Foundation. An additional P1 million was also donated to affected Gawad Kalinga communities.

Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. (Singtel), Globe’s Singapore partner announced that it will also donate P1 million to aid the victims of the tropical storm.

Earlier, Globe BridgeCom distributed relief packages that included food, water and other basic necessities to around 5,000 families in communities in Marikina and Rizal areas. It will distribute another round of 6,000 relief packages in the coming days to communities still to be identified. Around 640 Globe employee volunteers trooped to the evacuation centers to distribute the relief goods.

Likewise Globe, in cooperation with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), has set up Libreng Tawag Centers to enable the public to make free national or international long-distance calls. The Libreng Tawag stations were put up at the evacuation center in Ever Gotesco Mall in Cainta, and at the Brgy. Hall of Brgy. Barangka and Leodegario Elementary School in Marikina. This is in addition to the Libreng Tawag stations set up for the use of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) and relief workers at Camp Aguinaldo and the AFP Command Post at Ever Gotesco Cainta.

As early as Saturday night at the height of the typhoon, Globe had responded to the call of the government to assist in its efforts by providing four additional numbers for the NDCC Operations Center Hotline. The NDCC hotlines are numbers that people can call for disaster emergency situations, especially urgent rescue and relief needs.

Globe has also opened its doors to those who would like to donate relief goods. Globe business centers in Metro Manila like Alabang Town Center, Festival Mall, Robinson’s Malate, SM Southmall, SM Mall of Asia, SM Bicutan, SM North Edsa, SM Fairview, TriNoma, Greenbelt 4, Park Square, SM Makati, Walter Mart in Bulacan, Metrotown Mall in Tarlac, NE Pacific Mall in Cabanatuan, SM Clark and Marquee Mall in Pampanga are now accepting relief goods which will distributed to the typhoon victims.

In addition, Globe is helping the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) accept donations via its Donate-a-Load service. Globe subscribers can text RED<space>AMOUNT to 2899 for free. Donations can be in the amount of P5, P25, P50, P100, P300, P500, and P1,000. As of today, the public has donated over P2 million through this facility.

Globe GCASH is also waiving its fees for its GCASH REMIT service from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, 2009 in order to encourage the public especially Filipinos abroad to donate via GCASH.

Tropical storm “Ondoy” battered Metro Manila and outlying Luzon provinces last Sept. 25 and triggering massive flashfloods in several areas. The government has placed Metro Manila and 25 of its provinces under state of calamity.
