65 Cebu schools stay connected with Globe

-

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom, through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm Globe Bridging Communities (BridgeCom), recently recognized 65 public high schools in Cebu for their commitment to sustain their schools’ Internet connectivity provided by Globe through its Internet in Schools Program (ISP).  Globe recognized the 65 schools from the divisions of Cebu province, Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu City, Mandaue City, Talisay City, and Toledo City for having shown commitment and leadership in their desire to uplift the standard of education through the use of information and communications technology.

“By exerting efforts and pooling resources to sustain the donation that Globe has initially given them, these schools have sustained their internet connectivity for several years already. Due to the enormous help to both students and teachers, these schools made sure that they were able to raise funds for the maintenance of their computer laboratory and internet connection,” Jeffrey Tarayao, Globe community relations head said.

Schools like Florencio Urot Memorial National High School in Cebu City and Tayud National High School in Consolacion were able to raise funds by offering basic computer education to students, out-of-school youth, and professionals. The schools also use their computer labs as Internet cafés for students. Each student pays a monthly fee and may use the Internet facility during lunch time.

“Through the donation made by Globe, our students are able to research online,” said Florencio Getigan, information communications technology coordinator, Urot Memorial National High School said.

“Our teachers are also using the internet to get additional information for their lessons,” added Myran Soco, information and communications technology coordinator, Tayud National High School.

ISP is one of the major education programs of Globe BridgeCom. The program utilizes Globe Broadband to provide free Internet connectivity in applicable public high schools in the country. ISP is also Globe’s contribution to the nationwide program, Gearing Up Internet Literacy & Access for Students (GILAS).

Globe is committed to support the development of education initiatives in the Philippines especially in utilizing broadband technologies.  Today, Globe has historically connected more than 800 public high schools in 41 provinces in the entire Philippines. Of the 874 total schools connected 419 are found in the Visayas, 335 in Mindanao and 120 are in Luzon.
