Listen to the 'Beat of Silence' at DLSU
Englicom, in cooperation with the Link Center for the Deaf, invites everyone to witness the “Beat of Silence” slated on Friday, Jan. 23 at the De La Salle University Yuchengco Auditorium on Taft Avenue. The musical performance by the scholars of Link Center for the Deaf together with the Quezon City Performing Arts is one of the highlights of the Deaf Awareness event on the DLSU campus. The event will also feature performances by LSDC-jazz n street, Skittlez, Innersoul, Harlequin Theater Group. An exhibit dubbed “Silent Sensation “, promoting deaf awareness, will simultaneously run from Jan. 19 to 23.
Hear this: The Beat of Silence is composed of 25 deaf children who were mentored by hearing peers chosen through a scholarship given by the Quezon City Performing Arts Development Foundation under Joy Belmonte-Alimurung.
Very few people are aware of the capabilities of deaf people; their talents often go unnoticed , and the opportunities to develop their creative selves are hardly available. The sad truth is, beyond the disability, is a child, like any other, whose dreams may not be realized without the support and awareness of mainstream society. Thus, the Link Center for the Deaf came up with the program “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges” which aims to give deaf children the chance to meet and communicate with other deaf young people and hearing mentors, enhance their social skills, train in the visual and performing arts giving way to express themselves in the universal language of art. Through the years, the Link Center for the Deaf remains committed to educate the local community and challenge attitudes by showing how much deaf young people can achieve with the right support, breaking down barriers and giving deaf children the chance to be productive citizens of the country.
The Englicom Organization of DLSU will be partners with the Link Center for the Deaf for this undertaking. As a backgrounder, Englicom is a name taken from the three original colleges of De La Salle University: Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Commerce. No longer exclusive to Chinese students, Englicom seeks to be a prime mover towards a unified Filipino-Chinese youth by forming alliances with other organizations and groups beyond the university and directing its efforts towards a more involved and socially conscious Filipino-Chinese community.
The event is made possible by Jollibee, Gilbert Emerson Marketing Corporation, World Class Laminate Incorporation, Manly Plastics Incorporation, Mobil Lubricants, GT Radial-Tire Asia Group, Gilda Catalina Lim Foundation and Sun Village. Media sponsors include ABS-CBN Foundation, Transit, and The Lasallian while printing sponsors are Exceads Graphics and Netopia.
