The opera of Frederick Peralta
Frederick Peralta celebrated his 25th anniversary at the opening night of the Spring Summer ’09 Philippine Fashion Week to a full house. Clients, friends and media all gathered to view the designer’s latest wares with high anticipation. And he did not disappoint. If there were bride-to-be’s in the audience, undecided on the perfect dress, they would have a field day picking from the extravaganza with the variety of styles, fabric and cuts to choose from.
There were traditional gowns with a fitted bodice and huge skirts, slim and sleek dresses, goddess-inspired gowns and even some period pieces. Not all designs were done in the best taste, but the flawless workmanship that was so evident made you overlook the sometimes costumey feel of some pieces.
Nature seemed to be a big inspiration, with floral appliqués and embroidery attached to the gowns. Even his accessories of hanging floral arrangements used as wristbands and head pieces were, although not the usual choice for most women, refreshing and out of the box. His exquisite bags made of metal and silverware very much stole the show and were the fitting complement to the lavish designs.
Frederick also showed a couple of men’s formal suits, showcasing his mastery of tailoring. He was not afraid to use unusual fabrics (some looked like upholstery) and made it work. The designer showed his softer side and added an entourage of children as flower girls and ring bearers wearing precious garb that garnered collective smiles and cooing from the audience.
Frederick continues to be a favorite of local actresses, with some of Philippine cinema’s most beautiful modeling his creations. Joyce Jimenez, Agot Isidro, Mariel Rodriguez, Angel Aquino, Wilma Doesnt and senatorial wife Christine Escudero all worked the runway expertly and brought their own individual flair to the gowns. The finale featured Assunta de Rossi, nowadays rarely seen in public, in a gorgeous gold ensemble that highlighted her every curve, proving to the crowd that staying power equals influence and adoration from your most loyal clients.
