The release of the spring- summer collections is something I always get quite excited about. After all, it’s the only bunch where you can get gear that’s practically wearable all year round in our climate. Who in his right mind would wear a winter leather jacket and velvet pants in the tropics? Okay, you might know a few victims.
This season’s designer works showcase yet another dizzying kaleidoscope of trends  leggings worn with baggy shirts; red is the new black; tiny belts worn with über-slim pants; animal-printed thigh-length shorts; blazers that stop at the waistline; ties worn with shorts  the list goes on and on. It’s all well and good to be tres a la mode, that is, until you’ve reached a certain age and a certain waistline. It’s absolutely crucial to know when you’ve extended your stay and it’s time to toss out that satin zebra-printed gigolo top.
Having just turned another year older, I am slowly but happily building a classic yet contemporary wardrobe. It’s great to look towards labels like Hugo Boss and Tod’s, which have been around for some time. It’s time you looked for pieces that won’t make you look like you got stuck in some tired fashion era.
Hugo Boss takes its inspiration from two awesome cities where urban landscapes merge with water: Chicago on the edge of Lake Michigan and Marseilles beside the Mediterranean. For high summer, the collection plays with volume and the interaction between tight and loose.
The straight and clean lines of Chicago’s skyscrapers provide inspiration for the silhouette. The theme is focused on sophisticated urban dressing, with two-button and one-button single-breasted suits with slim lapels, a narrow construction and shorter jacket lengths.
Dark blue is the dominant color for tailoring, plus grayish blue, asphalt gray, beige as well as shades of white. For accessories there are accents of light yellow, blue, green-gray and rose. Fabrics are richer than ever, with cotton-silk and mohair-silk mixes an outstanding choice.
Printed and laser-etched lines add a new dimension to leather. Material mix is a theme for accessories, with lizard combined with ostrich. The Chicago theme is highlighted in men’s jewelry with "Chicago" buckles, necklaces and bracelets.
Strong shift in mood to the deep south of France, where the orange-tinted rooftops and the yellow faded walls of the buildings of Marseilles give depth to the color palette. The silhouette is less precise, more relaxed and easy. Linen and easy cotton fabrics dominate. Shirt-style jackets and polo shirts define the mood, with a touch of 1950s inspiration.
Play games with volume; consider the balance between tight and loose. Chalky beige, sand, camel dominate, with touches of gold, olive, chocolate brown and a strong white. Blue, orange, yellow and light green and orange are accents for accessories.
Maritime details are gold buttons and a rich choice of stripes. Other highlights include deep V-neck linen sweaters, silk-cashmere tees and colored suede jackets matched by suede belts.
The new Boss Black Lifestyle accessories collection features a small selection of pieces for the home that make perfect gifts. They include a golden scented candle, a wooden candle-holder and matching candles, a patchwork leather cushion and a manicure set. Also featured are playing cards and a dice cup.
Hugo Boss is exclusively distributed by Stores Specialists, Inc. The boutiques are located at Greenbelt 4 and Shangri-La Plaza Mall.
Tod's collection is a reflection of the new, understated and sober trend of the season.
For this season, Tod’s discovers its roots and proposes products that date back to the art of bespoke tailoring, where quality and the prestige of "handmade" are basic.
Tod’s shoes have always been known for their elegance and class and the ability to combine innovative and contemporary design in a handcrafted product. The silhouettes, the materials and the impeccable details make for inimitable designs, which are available in an array of classic browns and modern colors.
My five-year-old Tod’s driving shoes have become my most favorite casual footwear. The brand’s signature shoe is revisited and becomes sporty in the lace-up version or elegant with the minute eyelets. The contemporary design and handcrafting in this season’s collection perfectly celebrate the trademark values and style of the brand.
The New O is the shoe of the season. Soft and lightweight, its streamlined silhouette makes it perfect for every occasion. Tod’s traditional shoes, whether lace-up or with a buckle, are ideal city shoes, whilst the leather sandals with the metal buckle perfect for creating that unique and trendy look at the beach.
The new collection carries a vast array of gentlemen’s accessories for the man who cares about his appearance and knows that it is the details that make the difference.
The duffel bag has a practical and roomy design with handles, shoulder strap and pockets; it is elegant, refined, feather-light and with a clean silhouette.
Tod’s key holders are playful and fun, made of leather and metal and shaped like a life preserver.
The spring/summer 2007 men’s collection and accessories are available at the Tod’s boutique in Greenbelt 4 this March.
