The champions of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games took center stage amid a shower of confetti as People Asias People of the Year 2005 Awards night unfolded at the jam-packed, star-studded Rizal Ballroom of Makati Shangri-La. They received a standing ovation and thunderous applause from all the guests, including President Arroyo herself.
In his welcome remarks, People Asia chairman and publisher Max Soliven praised the recipients of the awards and especially acknowledged the efforts of the Southeast Asian Games athletes. He encouraged everyone to "light (their) own match," to spread the light, especially in times of uncertainty.
Soliven, Stargate CEO and president Babes Romualdez, People Asia editor in chief Joanne Rae Ramirez and GM Elizabeth Mendoza presented the awards together with Viking Cars president Albert Arcilla, Standard Chartered Bank SVP Mike Aguilar and Ihab Sorial, Air France KLM general manager for the South China Sea region.
Noli Cabahug, Rachelle Gerodias and the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra provided the enchanting music for the guests.
The People of the Year Awards night was presented in cooperation with Volvo (Viking Cars), Standard Chartered Bank and Air France KLM, with First Vita Plus, Pilipinas Shell, Ralphs Wines and Spirits, Dockers, NBC Joey 92.3, Maja Fragrances and Personal Care Products and The Philippine STAR as major sponsors.
