World’s first 3-megapixel DVD Handycam: Bright and Sony

- Ching M. Alano -
First came the camera (which is still alive and clicking since it first saw the light of day in 1888). Then came the recorder in the 1950s and not much later came the camcorder. The camcorder, first introduced by Sony in 1983, was a humongous device that needed a sturdy tripod – and even sturdier shoulders – to support. That was until Sony went big on miniaturization and came up with the Handycam, putting technology right in the palms of our hands.

Now comes Sony DCR-DVD803, the world’s first 3-megapixel DVD camcorder. And hear this: It is also the world’s first Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator compatible camcorder model – imagine being able to record and automatically encode 5.1-channel surround sound for outstanding playback in home theater systems. Those who seek not only high quality video recordings but also realistic and dramatic sound will find this gadget of desire a really sound investment. And now, the Handycam becomes even handier with the addition of DVD+RW format support. Take note: Video recordings on the 8cm DVD can go into almost any DVD player without the need for finalization. What a bright – and Sony – idea!

With its innovative and easy-to-use products, Sony has made storing and sharing precious moments more fun and convenient than ever before.

Here’s looking at the world’s first 3 Mega Pixel DVD Handycam up close: Boasting Sony’s exclusive Mega Pixel Engine technology, built into this very handy Handycam are such features as advanced HAD CCD, inter-frame noise reduction and raw data noise reduction. Thanks to the Mega Pixel Engine, high-quality and high-resolution images are achieved as an enormous amount of data are processed, a clear indication indeed of the ultra high-speed signal processing and the raw noise reduction technologies.

A Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T Lens fit on the Handycam features a 10x optical zoom (8.5x for camera-memory Mode), with the renowned T lens coating to minimize reflections, enable superb video images even when capturing a moving object. Additional start/stop recording and zoom buttons are available on the LCD frames to aid in low-angle shooting or taking self-portraits in mirror mode. Don’t you sometimes want to do that? All three models are compatible with the three recording modes for movie – HQ (high quality), SP (standard), and LP (long time) – enabling users to capture high-resolution videos and allocating more space to more complex footage while blocking the noisiness that affects picture quality.

This Handycam comes loaded with Visual Index, Slide Show, and Photo Movie functions, designed to enhance users’ shooting, viewing, and sharing experiences to the max.

The Visual Index function displays images that are captured as thumbnails, if only to allow users to easily find and play back favorite scenes, plus spare oneself the hassle of having to search the entire DVD for them.

The Photo Movie function affords users the option to convert still images in jpeg format to movies in mpeg format and play them back on other DVD players or even a PC.

Lastly, the Slide Show feature allows users to sequentially play back all still images in the disc.

A PictBridge connection on the DCR-DVD803 allows the printing of your high-quality 3-megapixel pictures directly on any PictBridge compliant printer. Selection of images and copies can be conveniently done via the camera’s LCD display.

Talk about picture-perfect convenience!
