Music’s next big thing

After a relentless search for the next big thing in the music industry, Hilera, a trio from Kalayaan College, emerged as victors at the recently concluded Nescafe Soundskool held at the PhilSports Arena (Ultra) in Pasig City.

Nescafe Soundskool is an inter-collegiate band competition with college bands competing for the glory of musical recognition. The competition toured over 100 top universities and colleges. "Our project not only helps independent student bands achieve their dreams, but also paves the way for school administrations to encourage students to be more productive in spending their free time," said Maureen Leigh Guiao of the marketing promotions and events department of Nestle Philippines, brand champion for Nescafe. "Our goals include uplifting the Filipino music industry and recognizing the wealth of young talented musicians in the county – even when they are still in college."

Hilera is composed of Ivan Garcia (bass) and Padilla brothers Chris (guitars/vocalist) and Bobby (drums). As the dusk settled and Hilera’s name was announced as the grand champions, the band members found themselves speechless.

Pretty soon, they’ll have to accept the fact that Filipino music-lovers will literally be lining up for their first record – since they’re now under the wing of music giant EMI Music Philippines.
