The art of charity

How can we creatively express our innate loving being this last weekend of romantic February? I suggest by extending a helping hand to charity. This can be achieved by a trek to Glorietta 3 at the Artspace for the Bazar de las Yslas. This is no ordinary bazaar trade shows the organizers showcase locally made items using indigenous material. Conscious of the fact that art cannot exist in a vacuum, the people of Bazar de Las Yslas have generously pledged part of the proceeds to support the activities of the Alay Kapwa Kilusang Pangkalusugan Inc. (AKAP) founded by Dra. Pardo De Tavera. Here is the list of participants who give the discriminating buyers a chance to rediscover the Philippines. Bazar de Las Yslas exhibition and sale will run until 04 March 4:

1) Award-winning production designer Mike Guison teams up with filmmaker Don Escudero to present a collection of massive and exotic wood in minimalist furniture. The result is the very distillation of the form into almost primal bangko, mesa and upuan.

2) Lawyer/painter Bienvenido Benitez, dubbed as an upcoming "artist to watch" by noted critics; he explores the abstract possibilities of hues that reminds the countryside of the archipelago.

3) Potter Ugu Bigyan presents a rarely seen collection. His pieces are both decorative and functional. Save yourself the trip to his atelier in Quezon province and view it here instead.

4) Firma, Malate’s stylist couple Markus Schmidt and Richard Danao, unveils its export collection of home accessories, inspired from the wealth of the our seas. A playful combination of indigenous material reflecting the nation’s sense of humor

5) Kaban display of rare collection of Pre-Hispanic jewelry. This is usually available for private viewing. Take advantage and see these stunning pieces made of original gold, ceramic and glass beads.

6) Gallery X hangs fine antiquarian prints from the 19th century and earlier contemporary art prints and watercolor botanical paintings.
